About the Title

It took me a while to make my blog public, mostly because I couldn’t think of a good title.  At first it was “Indonesia Journeys,” which is probably one of the lamest titles there is.  However, during one of my language classes I learned the phrase “Suka dan Duka,” which means “the ups and downs of life.”  When I first considered it for the title it seemed kind of cheesy yet also fitting.  While the majority of my blog posts are going to be about the “ups” of my experiences here in Indonesia, there are without a doubt going to be many “downs” as I live and work here.  While the “ups” are what we cherish most, it is the “downs” that help us grow and learn.  I think the purpose of my Luce year is to experience the ups and downs of life in Indonesia, and by doing so, gain a better understanding of the culture.  So it is my hope that this blog can serve as a window into my Suka dan Duka di Indonesia, or my “ups and downs of life in Indonesia.”
